Car Seat - Useful Accessories

  • Aprons and cosytoes - these are often available as extras with some makes of car seat, particularly if they are part of a travel system. Alternatively they can be bought as individual items.
  • Cat and insect nets - a fine netting material that fits over an infant carrier to protect the baby out of doors.
  • Head cushion and neck support - these come with most car seats, but are definitely worth buying if they do not. They not only add comfort, but also support for your baby's head. You can also buy head cushions and neck supports for older babies and children who tend to fall asleep in the car.
  • Harness strap cover - this provides extra padding around the harness strap, and can be bought individually if it does not come as standard in your car seat.
  • Sun screen - available in numerous designs, this fits to the car window to stop the sun shining on your baby.
  • Sun and rain covers - some infant carriers have them as extras, particularly if they can be used as part of a travel system. They are also available as individual items from manufacturers who specialise in nursery accessories.
  • Baby view mirror - a small mirror to position alongside the car rear view mirror, to enable you to look at your baby or child without having to turn round.
  • Heat cover - this goes over the car seat when it is not in use, preventing the metal frames and buckles from getting hot when the car is parked in the sun.
  • Seat covers - a great incentive for older toddlers who do not like their seats. These are available in lots of bright and colourful designs.
  • Seat protector - a plastic cover that goes over the back seat to protect it from scuff marks, spills and dirty feet.
  • Play tray - some types of car seat can be fitted with a removable play tray. Check that it would be quick and simple to remove in the event of an accident.
  • Car tray - a small folding tray that attaches to the back of the adult seat, opening out when the car is stationary.
  • Toy tidy - a specially designed bag with lots of compartments to hold toys and baby paraphernalia; usually attaches to the back of the adult seat.
  • Toys - there is a good selection of toys designed to be played with in the car that attach in various ways depending on the type of car seat and age of baby or child.

Buying Your Car Seat

Fitting Your Car Seat

This section includes information on the different types of car seat, explaining which seat is the right size for your child, what to look for, useful accessories and important things to remember before you buy. The car seat safety guide, sections on child car seats and the law, and car seats on test, provide the vital safety information that you need when buying your car seat. This section also includes information on fitting your seat, with a step-by-step guide to installing your car seat, a list of common problems and information on where to get help.

With most car seats in the UK being fitted incorrectly, it is crucial that you have access to the right information when selecting and fitting your child's seat. Our trained staff are all experienced car seat fitters and we have used their collective knowledge to put together this information. The golden rule is that it is absolutely essential that you get the fit checked if you are in any doubt at all.. Some manufacturers have car compatibility fitting guides on their websites, however it should be remembered that these are just guides and are not definitive lists. Not all car seats will fit all cars, and no car or car seat manufacturer can guarantee a secure and safe fit. All cars are different, even two of the same make and model can have different length seat belts!

It is therefore essential to ensure your car seat is fitted correctly, in order to secure your child's safety whilst travelling in the car. The showroom is based just outside of Wallingford and we are always happy to check the fitting of your car seat.

Three important points to remember about car seats are:

  • Always buy a car seat to suit your child's weight rather than height.
  • Not all car seats fit all cars; check the model you have chosen will fit your car. Seek professional advice if you are unsure.
  • Always buy a car seat because it has safety features that improve fit and protection, not because it has attractive fabric choices or good value accessories.
